PREFACE.

The Parish, comprisinc,r the Townships of Seaham, Seaton,
and Slingley is bounded on the North by Bishopwearmouth,
on the West by Houghton-le-Spring, on the South by Dalton-
le-Dale, and on the East by the German Ocean.

The Parish of Seaham comprises an area ot 2,392 acres.

The Church was possibly originally dedicated to St. Andrew,
^' and subsequently re-dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin.

\ Mention should be made of the following marriage :—

^ " 1815 Ian. 2nd. George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron of
Rochdale, and Anne Isabella Milbanke, of this parish, were
^ married in Seaham House by special license, by me Tho. Noel,
^ Rector of Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire, in presence of John
t V Cam Hobhouse, of Chauntry House, Wilts, and Richard Wallis,
^v Vicar of Seaham." 134GGhI5

^ The population given by the census returns is as follows :—

I 1801 - - 211 i86i - - 2,827

1811 - - 247 1871 - - 3.030

1821 - - 198 J 881 - - 334

1831 - - 264 1891 - - 335

i 1841 - - 328 1901 - - 354

1851 - - 929
Where the entry is illegible, or where there is no entry at
all, the Editor has indicated it by \dlank], and where any doubt
as to the name existed, by a query.

The letters lie. in the Marriage Registers indicate that the
Marriage was solemnized by License: where this does not occur
it was in all cases performed after the Publication of Banns.

It is well to remind readers that previous to 1752 the year
began on the 25th of March, instead of, as now, on the ist of
